International Symposium on Sleep Apnea and Other Sleep Disorders

Zagreb, May 10-11, 2024

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) emphasizes that "in an age of constant activity, the solution to improving the nation's health may lie in helping people sleep better." In line with this, an intensive course dedicated to sleep apnea and other sleep disorders was held in Zagreb on May 10-11, 2024.

Comprehensive knowledge on the sleep disorders

This international symposium provided comprehensive knowledge on the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and five other sleep disorders. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the prevalence and incidence of sleep disorders and their impact on the economy and healthcare costs.

The international symposium covered the following topics:

  • Basic physiology of sleep
  • Signs and symptoms of various sleep disorders
  • Differences between PG and PSG diagnostics
  • Basics of drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE)
  • CPAP therapy
  • The role of nasal surgery in treating OSA
  • Application of barbed wire pharyngoplasty versus UPPP
  • Steps in applying a mandibular advancement device (MAD) for treating
    OSA
  • Hypoglossal nerve stimulation for treating OSA
  • Bariatric surgery as an option for treating OSA
  • Disorders such as hypersomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, insomnia and
    movement disorders during sleep
  • Functioning of a multidisciplinary sleep disorders team

The symposium began on Friday, May 10, 2024, with an introductory lecture by Dr. Lohuis. The program included presentations on the phenotypes of obstructive sleep apnea, the evolution of diagnostics and treatment, polygraphy and polysomnography, and OSA complications and their impact on health insurance.

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the focus was on the roles of multidisciplinary teams in Europe, treatment of insomnia, central hypersomnia disorders, circadian rhythms, parasomnias, and movement disorders during sleep. The event concluded with an honorary lecture by Dr. Copper on organizing sleep diagnostics and treatment in the Netherlands outside of hospital settings.

The international symposium in Zagreb was a success, providing participants with the latest information and practical skills for treating sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. Participants gained valuable knowledge that will help them provide better care to patients and improve their health and quality of life.
