Zagreb, September 13, 2019
On September 13, 2019, a one-day international symposium on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was held in Zagreb. OSA is a disorder that, if left untreated, can significantly increase the risk of serious health complications such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression. The course brought together experts from various fields to discuss the latest diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
Obstructive sleep apnea not only affects individual health but also has economic repercussions due to reduced productivity, workplace accidents, and traffic accidents. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) emphasized the importance of improving sleep quality for the overall health of the nation.
The symposium provided an in-depth understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of OSA and reviewed current diagnostic methods, including polysomnography and sleep-induced endoscopy. Various treatment modalities were discussed, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), mandibular advancement devices (MAD), surgical interventions, positional therapy, upper airway neurostimulation, and bariatric surgery.
The program began with an introductory lecture by Dr. Filipović and moderator Dr. Šimunjak. Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to learn about the evolution of OSA diagnosis and treatment, the roles of different therapies, and the latest innovations and interventions.
Speakers included prominent experts such as Prof. Nico de Vries, Dr. Peter Lohuis, Dr. Boris Šimunjak, Dr. Pavao Krmpotić, and many others. The symposium concluded with an interactive session featuring case presentations and audience participation.
